Expanding the Pie when Negotiating Children’s Schedules
We have all had the client who wants to compare the number of days per month he or she has with the children to the number of days the children will spend with their other parent. That seems understandable, if not reasonable. Then there are the parents who want to compare hours, or waking hours, weekend hours, or non-school waking hours, or hours outside of school and extracurricular activities when they can be with their children. Although I have never had anyone ask me to compare good-mood hours to bad-mood hours, that request, sadly, would not surprise me very much. When parents hear that they have to divide something, many of them go straight to the idea that time with their children is a limited commodity, so they have to secure as much of it for themselves as possible, even when they have never paid much attention to time with their children in the past.
The purpose of this conversation is to discuss creative ways to “expand the pie” you’re dividing when “the pie” is time with children.
